OVERVIEW

Overview

A traditional Caribbean origin. Much goes to domestic consumption, but highland lots from the Cibao region are also actively exported to the US. A balanced profile with Caribbean-style sweetness.

HISTORY · TERROIR · CULTURE

History & culture

The Dominican Republic, occupying the eastern side of Hispaniola in the Caribbean, grows Arabica in mountain country led by Barahona. The cup is classic Caribbean — mellow, with cacao, nut and milk-chocolate sweetness over low acidity.

Classic Caribbean balance

Dominican coffee grows in the mountains of Barahona in the southwest, the central Cibao region, Baní and Juncalito. With altitude but a Caribbean climate far from the equator, the profile is the old-school kind that never tires: gentle acidity in balance with body. As with Jamaica and Cuba, that smooth, low-edge "Caribbean coffee" character drinks easily black, at leisure.

Barahona and a culture of home consumption

One Dominican signature: most of what the country grows, it drinks. Coffee is woven deep into daily life, and what remains for export is comparatively limited. International specialty fame therefore trails neighboring Jamaica, but top lots from Barahona and elsewhere are valued for steady quality built on careful farming and processing. A culture of local consumption, tied to tourism, shapes the origin’s character.
