History & culture

Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, grows small volumes of fine Arabica in the northern highlands — the Misuku Hills and around Mzuzu. It is also known as a rare African home of the famed Gesha variety, producing gentle, clean cups of citrus, honey and nut.

The Misuku Hills and the Gesha variety

Malawian coffee is raised by smallholders in the northern highlands — the Misuku Hills, the Viphya plateau, the country around Mzuzu. The cool, high climate produces bright acidity and clean sweetness. Most notable: Gesha, the variety that conquered the world from Panama, grows here in Malawi too — one of the few places in Africa where it does, a point that has long intrigued enthusiasts. Volumes are small, with careful washed processing and AA grading holding the quality line.
