Mainly Bourbon-lineage trees are washed to a clean, fruity standard — berry, citrus, honey, black tea.Contiguous with Rwanda’s Nyamasheke across the lake, it offers specialty from the same favored climate band.
The high country around Lake Kivu is a fine origin blessed with the same conditions as Rwanda and Burundi. Volcanic soil, moderate humidity and stable temperatures draw out the potential of Bourbon. Shipments were long unstable under the shadow of conflict, but washing-station development has advanced, and clean, fruity specialty is being produced again.
South Kivu has also borne the effects of conflict over mineral resources such as tantalum and cobalt. Coffee farming receives international support as a key sector for peacebuilding and rural economic recovery, and through fair trade and direct trade it is becoming an origin that Japanese roasters actively carry as well.
