About this region

i.Where Nicaraguan coffee began

Matagalpa is the historic region where coffee growing in Nicaragua started, with full-scale production from the late 19th century. Its calm, balanced flavor could be called the original template of Nicaraguan drinkability. A producer base running from mountain smallholders to large estates is also characteristic of this land.

ii.How it differs from Jinotega

Where neighboring Jinotega is cooler and somewhat higher, Matagalpa holds a broad climate band from mid to high elevation, with a somewhat higher share of natural processing. Expect caramel and nut sweetness more to the fore — a warmer profile.
