Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was one of the world’s great coffee producers in the 19th century. But the leaf-rust outbreak that spread in 1869 devastated the estates, forcing a switch to tea. The central highlands were the heart of that glory.
Today, on a small scale, coffee growing is reviving, yielding lots with a spicy, rustic flavor. Its heavier character suits a medium to medium-dark roast to draw out body.
