Chinese coffee farming took off in the late 20th century, its planted area expanding rapidly around Yunnan with investment from international companies like Nestlé and Starbucks. Yunnan’s highlands on the borders of Myanmar and Laos suit Arabica in both altitude and climate, and China now ranks among the world’s producing countries. Tied to the growth of its enormous domestic consumer market, it carries a distinctive double identity: producer and consumer at once.
