History & culture

China is a fast-rising producer, with Yunnan province in the southwest carrying most of the crop. In the highlands around Pu’er (of tea fame) and Baoshan, Catimor-led Arabica is grown, yielding mild cups of nut, gentle sweetness and herbs.

Yunnan’s rapid growth

Chinese coffee farming took off in the late 20th century, its planted area expanding rapidly around Yunnan with investment from international companies like Nestlé and Starbucks. Yunnan’s highlands on the borders of Myanmar and Laos suit Arabica in both altitude and climate, and China now ranks among the world’s producing countries. Tied to the growth of its enormous domestic consumer market, it carries a distinctive double identity: producer and consumer at once.

From Catimor toward specialty

What Yunnan planted at scale was Catimor stock — high-yielding and disease-resistant — aimed first at volume and commodity markets. Recently, though, specialty growers have emerged, processing washed and honey lots with care and trying their hand at Typica, Bourbon, even Gesha. The push to shift Yunnan’s reputation from "cheap" to "characterful" is on, and Chinese lots have begun drawing notice at international competitions.
