The Bolaven is a vast tableland in southern Laos blessed with fertile, volcanic basalt soils. Coffee growing was introduced in the early 20th century under French rule and, after the years of war, has been rediscovered in recent times. At a moderate elevation around 1,000m, the soil’s strength and the cool climate draw out Typica’s character.
Long centered on low-priced robusta and commercial arabica, the plateau now ships washed and honey micro-lots in small volumes, driven by buying from small European and Japanese roasters and the rise of specialty-minded Lao producers. An origin where you can seek out the taste of a “quiet Laos,” distinct from neighboring Vietnam and Thailand.
