HISTORY · TERROIR · CULTURE

History & culture

Madagascar, the island nation southeast of the African continent, produces mostly Robusta — yet it is known as a treasury of biodiversity where many coffee species grow wild found nowhere else. A great vanilla producer too, it carries a farming culture bound up with spice and sweet aromatics.

Robusta-led production and endemic wild species

Madagascar’s coffee is mostly lowland Robusta, long grown along the eastern coastal belt, with small amounts of Arabica higher up. What stands out is the island’s status as a treasury of wild Coffea: more than 60 endemic wild coffee species are recorded here, including some confirmed to be nearly caffeine-free. These wild species draw global interest as precious genetic resources for breeding varieties resilient to climate change and disease.
