HISTORY · TERROIR · CULTURE

History & culture

Cameroon, in central Africa, grows both Arabica and Robusta. Arabica thrives in the high west — the Bamboutos highlands and beyond — yielding flavors that recall berry, spice and chocolate. Once a top export crop, coffee here slumped for a time, but a revival is now stirring.

Arabica of the western highlands, Robusta below

Cameroonian coffee runs on two levels: Arabica in the high west and northwest — the Bamboutos highlands and the country around Bamenda — and Robusta in the lowlands. Fertile volcanic soils and highland climate provide the conditions for high-potential Arabica; Java (Typica-line) stock introduced in the colonial era has long been grown here. After independence coffee served as a key export crop, but production contracted against a backdrop of depressed prices.

Working toward revival

From the late 20th century, low international prices and an aging grower base kept Cameroonian coffee in a long slump. Recent years have brought replanting support from government and producer organizations and programs to raise quality and draw in a younger generation, seeking to rebuild the origin. Its international specialty profile is still ahead of it — but with such favorable natural conditions, Cameroon is being looked at anew as central Africa’s sleeping origin.
