How to read this roaster
Blue Bottle Coffee, born in Oakland, California, became the byword for third-wave coffee. Its first Japanese shop opened in Kiyosumi-shirakawa, Tokyo in 2015 and threw the country’s specialty boom into high gear. Selling single origins and blends in one-pound (≈454g) everyday packages is a form of distribution Blue Bottle itself brought to Japan.
Kiyosumi-shirakawa and the birth of a "coffee town"
Blue Bottle’s 2015 arrival transformed Kiyosumi-shirakawa into what is now called Tokyo’s coffee town. ARiSE Coffee Roasters, Allpress Espresso, All Star and other third-wave roasters gathered until the area became walkable café-hopping ground — an effect inseparable from Blue Bottle’s pull.
Medium roasts that hold the balance
Blue Bottle roasts mainly at medium — the balance of "specialty you can drink daily," keeping origin character while drawing out sweetness and body. It leans toward neither extreme of light nor dark, designing deliciousness for both hand drip and espresso.
Subscriptions
The online subscription, delivering blends and single origins on a schedule, is widely loved. With its balanced mix of seasonal lots and standard blends, it is an easy on-ramp to recommend to beginners building the habit of drinking specialty at home.
Recommended brewing
Blue Bottle’s published recipe is V60-based: 93°C, 30g coffee, 500g water, about 3:30 total. The French press is a team favorite — their "golden recipe," pressed at exactly 4 minutes, is public too.
