HISTORY · TERROIR · CULTURE

History & culture

Uganda is one of Africa’s leading coffee exporters and one of the few native homes of Robusta. Wild Robusta grows in the forests around Lake Victoria, while Arabica thrives on the heights of Mount Elgon and the Rwenzoris. It is an origin with two faces: Robusta’s muscular depth and the fruit of highland Arabica.

A native home of Robusta

Of coffee’s two cultivated species, Robusta (Coffea canephora) is native to central Africa, and the forests around Uganda’s Lake Victoria are counted among its original habitats. That Robusta was rooted here before it ever spread as a world crop speaks to the age of Uganda’s coffee culture. Robusta remains the export mainstay and a vital source of foreign exchange. Ugandan Robusta is known for relatively high quality, and carefully processed "fine Robusta" has begun to appear.

Mount Elgon Arabica (Bugisu)

On the slopes of Mount Elgon by the Kenyan border grows the Arabica known as Bugisu. Raised at 1,500–2,300m around the Sipi Falls, it carries bright acidity and stone-fruit character, and its specialty reputation has been climbing. In the west, the Rwenzori mountains produce "Drugar" (Dried Uganda Arabica). In the shadow of the "Robusta country" image, highland Arabica is quietly widening its possibilities.
