Mzuzu grows Kenyan-derived SL28 among other varieties, raising lots with a citrus-bright acidity. Northern Malawi is part of a coffee belt continuous with Tanzania’s Mbeya to the north, at the southern end of the East African Great Lakes region. Through the smallholder cooperative union (Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union), quality and sustainability keep improving.
Malawi’s total coffee production is tiny on the world scale, and chances to meet a Mzuzu lot in Japan are limited. All the more reason to try it when you find it — southern East Africa’s “other option.” Tasted against Tanzania or Kenya, it shows both the region’s continuity and its own personality.
