Overview

Kilimanjaro, grown on the foothills of Africa’s highest mountain, is Tanzania’s flagship origin.

On volcanic soils at 1,400–2,000m, washed processing yields blackcurrant, wine, bright citrus and florals — a bright acidity and berry character close to neighboring Kenya. In Japan it has long been a familiar friend under the “Kilimanjaro” name.

About this region

i.Brightness in the Kenyan vein

Blessed with the same mountain systems, highlands and volcanic soils as Kenya across the border, it carries a similarly bright, complex blackcurrant-like acidity. Less concentrated than Kenya, but floral and refined in balance. As Tanzania’s flagship export it is also known through the AA and AB screen-size grades.

ii.Why Japan says “Kilimanjaro”

After the war, most Tanzanian arabica entering Japan was imported under the “Kilimanjaro” name — including beans grown well beyond the mountain’s slopes. Today’s specialty market increasingly distinguishes true Kilimanjaro-foothill coffee (around Moshi and Arusha) as its own single origin.

iii.How to enjoy it

A light-to-medium roast on paper drip favors the bright acidity and fruit. Crisp and clean, it suits the after-meal cup and pairs well with desserts of real sweetness.
