About this region

i.Hub of the southern highlands

The southern highlands around Mbeya region — the Rungwe mountains and Kipengere range toward the borders with Malawi and Zambia — carry a large share of Tanzania’s production, and the high elevations nurture delicate, floral lots. The zone is one corner of a southern East African coffee belt climatically continuous with Malawi’s Mzuzu and Zambia’s specialty areas.

ii.How it differs from Kilimanjaro

Within the same Tanzania, the north around Kilimanjaro leans Kenyan with blackcurrant at the fore, while Mbeya leads with the sweetness of chocolate and stone fruit — a somewhat gentler profile. The south’s fruit is rounder, its acidity more measured, balance first. To speak of Tanzania, this is the pairing to drink side by side.
