OVERVIEW

Overview

South America's hidden high-quality origin. Centered on the Yungas region at 1,500–2,200m and led by smallholder organic cultivation. Low volume but highly rated at Cup of Excellence; export infrastructure is a challenge.

HISTORY · TERROIR · CULTURE

History & culture

Bolivia farms true high-altitude coffee — 1,500m to beyond 2,000m — in the Yungas, on the eastern slopes of the Andes. Volumes are small, but the delicate, sweet cups of florals, citrus and honey are treasured as insider specialty.

High-grown coffee of the Yungas

Most Bolivian coffee grows in the Yungas northeast of La Paz, above all around Caranavi. On steep slopes descending from the Andes toward the Amazon, smallholders raise Typica and Caturra. Altitude and wide day–night temperature swings ripen high-sugar cherry slowly, credited with transparent sweetness and floral aromatics. Inland and mountainous, the work is largely by hand — and that careful labor is what holds the quality.

Shrinking production, growing rarity

Bolivian production has, if anything, declined in recent years — competition from coca and other crops, the drift of the young to cities, hard logistics. Yet the growers who remained doubled down on quality, and Bolivia came to stand for "little volume, high grade" — a rare specialty. With supply so limited, each arrival draws collectors’ attention: something of a phantom origin.
