Overview

Mount Elgon (Bugisu) is Uganda’s finest arabica origin, spread over the slopes of Mount Elgon on the Kenyan border.

At 1,500–2,200m, washed processing produces complex flavor — stone fruit, chocolate, florals, spice. In robusta-dominated Uganda it is the rare high-quality arabica origin, with a bright profile recalling neighboring Kenya.

About this region

i.Uganda’s arabica exception

Uganda is known as a robusta-producing giant, but the Bugisu country on the foothills of Mount Elgon in the east is in a class of its own as an arabica origin. Blessed with the same mountain system and highlands as the Kenyan side, it grows specialty with bright, complex acidity. Cooperatives (Banyala, Bugisu and others) work on quality management.

ii.A coffee belt across the border

Mount Elgon is a single mountain system continuing across the border into Kenya’s Bungoma / Trans-Nzoia. The profiles run close to western Kenyan lots: stone fruit and citrus lightness to the fore rather than dense blackcurrant. A strong choice when you want “a balanced Africa without central Kenya’s flamboyance.”
