History & culture

Ecuador sits directly on the equator, farming coffee across the high Andes and a spread of climate zones. Output is modest, but lately top lots — above all the Sidra variety — have taken high honors at international competitions, and the country is fast gaining attention as a specialty origin.

Equatorial highlands and the Sidra variety

True to a name that means "equator," Ecuador grows high-altitude coffee by leveraging the Andes. Loja in the south and Pichincha in the north are the flagship areas. The recent star is Sidra — held to descend from Typica and Bourbon lines — whose lavish florals and tropical character have lit up barista championships and auctions. A small country drawing the world’s gaze through its curiosity about varieties.

The Galápagos and a spread of growing environments

Ecuador is also the rare country that grows coffee in the singular environment of the Galápagos Islands, a World Heritage site. Galápagos coffee, raised without agrochemicals within the volcanic islands’ delicate ecosystem, is a famous rarity. On the mainland too, wide variation in altitude, latitude and rainfall gives each area its own character. The direction is quality and varieties over scale — and Ecuador’s specialty presence keeps climbing steadily.
