HISTORY · TERROIR · CULTURE

History & culture

Burundi, a small landlocked country bordering Rwanda, grows Bourbon-variety coffee on its hills that yields delicate, floral flavors of berry, citrus and jasmine. Despite the handicap of having no coast, it is a rising origin whose presence in the specialty market has grown quickly.

Landlocked Bourbon and the washing stations

Burundian coffee is grown mainly from Bourbon stock on hills around 1,700m, centered on Kayanza and Ngozi in the north. As in neighboring Rwanda, smallholders bring ripe cherry to communal washing stations for centralized processing — the system that sustains quality. Clean, bright acidity folded with black tea and jasmine florals embodies the delicacy of the East African highlands.

The recent specialty surge

As a landlocked country, Burundi must truck its beans to distant ports, carrying high logistics costs and the difficulty of preserving quality en route. Even so, from the 2010s, Cup of Excellence participation and better processing infrastructure lifted quality and caught the attention of roasters worldwide. Like Rwanda it must manage the "potato defect," but carefully sorted top lots are prized as finds that drink far above their price.
