History & culture

Panama’s production is small, but the discovery of the Gesha (Geisha) variety rewrote world coffee history. In 2004 a Gesha entered by Hacienda La Esmeralda posted unheard-of scores at Best of Panama, showing the world what high-altitude Arabica could be: jasmine, bergamot, tropical fruit. Ever since, Panama has led the world in both price and acclaim — the holy land of Gesha and the summit of high-end specialty.

2004 — the Gesha revolution

At Hacienda La Esmeralda in Boquete, a variety of then-unknown origin growing among the farm’s trees stunned cuppers at the 2004 Best of Panama. The interplay of jasmine, bergamot, peach and passion fruit overturned the very idea of what Arabica was. The variety was traced to the village of Gesha in southwestern Ethiopia, and under the names "Geisha" and "Gesha" it has since spread to high farms around the world. Panamanian Gesha keeps setting records at the Best of Panama Geisha auction — tens of thousands of yen per pound and beyond — and reigns as the pinnacle of luxury specialty coffee.

Boquete, Volcán, Renacimiento — Panama’s three districts

Panamanian coffee concentrates in three districts of western Chiriquí province: Boquete, Volcán and Renacimiento. Boquete, on the slopes of Volcán Barú at 1,200–1,900m with a mild, humid climate, is the signature home of Gesha. Volcán and Renacimiento sit higher still at 1,500–2,000m, growing Gesha and other top varieties under stricter climatic conditions.

Best of Panama as a quality benchmark

Best of Panama (BOP), begun in 1996 and run by the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, draws judges from around the world every year. Since 2017 the Geisha division has stood on its own, with top lots auctioned in Washed and Natural categories — a global platform connecting the origin with buyers. Japanese roasters (TAKAMURA, Glitch, Maruyama Coffee and others) regularly win top BOP lots at auction, giving Japan shelf access to the world’s finest Gesha.
